Len Dawson was an American professional quarterback whose 19-season career is most closely associated with the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. A Purdue graduate, he entered the league in 1957 but rose to prominence after signing with the Dallas Texans in 1962 — a reunion with coach Hank Stram — when he began to lead the AFL in efficiency, touchdowns and passer rating. Throughout the 1960s, Dawson established himself as an accurate passer within Stram’s "moving pocket" system, winning three league titles and leading the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl IV, where he was named MVP. He was also the AFL MVP in 1962, led the league in several categories and was selected to multiple All-Star games. When he retired after the 1975 season, he left significant marks on the club’s history: records for passing yards, touchdowns and other offensive marks, and the Chiefs retired his number 16. He later worked as a sports director for Kansas City television and as the team’s radio commentator. His career earned him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and a prominent place in the history of professional football.
