Lew Ayres (Lewis Frederick Ayer III) was an American actor whose film and television career spanned more than six decades. He became known for his role as soldier Paul Bäumer in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) and cemented his reputation by portraying Dr. Kildare in nine films, a part that linked him to a physician archetype in popular culture. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance in Johnny Belinda (1948). During the 1930s and 1940s he worked for studios including Universal, Fox, Republic, Paramount and MGM, alternating between major productions and smaller films. In addition to acting, he tried his hand at directing in the 1930s and participated in radio and television series in subsequent decades, maintaining a continuous screen presence into the 1990s. Ayres’s public stance during World War II—initially declaring himself a conscientious objector and later serving as a medical officer in the Pacific—marked his biography, leading to active service as a nurse’s aide and earning three battle stars. He later returned to entertainment and received awards for documentary work connected to his spiritual convictions. His legacy includes iconic roles that influenced cinematic portrayals of doctors and soldiers, and he is recognized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with two stars.
