Lillian Hellman was an American playwright and writer recognized as one of the most important voices in the theater of her generation. The author of plays with strong social impact, she found success on Broadway with works such as The Children’s Hour (1934), which provoked controversy for its depiction of a false accusation of a relationship between two teachers, and The Little Foxes (1939), which was adapted for film in 1941 starring Bette Davis.
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s Hellman aligned herself with intellectuals and artists in antifascist causes, writing politically charged plays such as Watch on the Rhine (1941) and The Searching Wind (1944). She also worked in Hollywood as a script reader and was involved in film adaptations of her work, combining a theatrical career with collaboration in cinema.
In the 1950s she faced persecution during the anti-Communist wave in the United States; she and her partner Dashiell Hammett were called to testify before investigative committees, an experience Hellman later recounted in memoir writings. Her output also includes collections of portraits and memoirs, such as Pentimento (1973), which inspired the film Julia (1977). Hellman’s legacy remains associated with socially engaged theater and a strong female presence in twentieth-century dramatic literature.
