Lilly Wachowski is an American filmmaker, screenwriter and producer, best known for her collaborative work with her sister Lana as the Wachowski duo. She rose to international prominence with The Matrix trilogy (1999–2003), a box-office and critical phenomenon that influenced contemporary science fiction and visual effects and popularized techniques such as “bullet time.” After The Matrix, the sisters continued to write and direct ambitious projects: they contributed to the complex, ensemble Cloud Atlas (2012) and created the space fantasy Jupiter Ascending (2015). For television they debuted on Netflix with Sense8 (2015), a series that explored empathy and identity through a global narrative and interconnected characters. Lilly’s career began in the 1990s writing scripts and directing Bound (1996), a neo-noir thriller that drew attention for its portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships. Her work has been marked by aesthetic experimentation and recurring themes of existence, technology and identity. Lilly and Lana are also publicly known for their personal journeys as transgender women, a fact that attracted cultural and media attention alongside their influence on genre cinema.
