Linwood Vrooman Carter, known as Lin Carter, was an American author prolific in science fiction and fantasy who also worked as an editor, poet, and critic. He became a central figure in sword-and-sorcery literature by revitalizing and expanding classic sagas — notably by working on Robert E. Howard’s Conan and Kull stories — and by creating his own hero, Thongor of Lemuria.
His work includes numerous series and planetary-adventure and prehistoric-fantasy novels, such as the Thongor saga and the Callisto tetralogy, in addition to standalone novels and short-story collections. Carter also wrote under pseudonyms and echoed literary influences in his pen names, reflecting his engagement with the pulp and fantastic tradition.
As an editor and critic, he helped spread the fantasy canon by editing magazines, anthologies, and editions that shaped tastes and references for readers and fellow writers. His legacy endures both through his original tales and his revisitations and editions of classics, influencing generations of fans and authors of popular fantasy.
