Louis François Clément Breguet was a French physicist and watchmaker whose work in the 19th century bridged traditional horology and the earliest electrical and telegraph technologies. Heir to the celebrated Breguet firm, he took over management in 1833 and standardized production, expanding it to include scientific instruments, electrical devices and synchronized clocks, combining fine craft with technical innovation. In the 1840s he collaborated on telegraph systems: in 1842, with Alphonse Foy, he created a needle telegraph that replaced the optical telegraph, and in 1847 he devised a step-by-step system adopted by railways and exported to Japan. He also studied methods to protect cables from electrical discharges and contributed to equipment used in measurements of the speed of light. Breguet extended the family business into telephony, obtaining a license to manufacture Bell apparatus in France, and designed networks of electric public clocks. Recognized for his involvement in the sciences and telecommunications, he was a member of the Bureau des Longitudes, the French Academy of Sciences, and was awarded the Legion of Honor. His technical legacy spanned generations, influencing both watchmaking and the early development of electrical communications.
