Louis-Joseph Chevrolet was a Swiss-born racecar driver and mechanical engineer, best known for cofounding the Chevrolet Motor Car Company with William C. Durant, a firm that later became part of General Motors and grew into one of the world’s most recognized automotive brands. His career combined technical skill with a passion for racing: he designed his first engine in 1909 and, after selling his stake in the company in 1915, focused intensely on motorsport.
In the 1910s Chevrolet designed and built racing cars — including the Cornelian in collaboration with Howard E. Blood — and with his brother Gaston founded the Frontenac Motor Corporation to develop competition vehicles. He competed repeatedly in the Indianapolis 500, recording among his best results a seventh-place finish in 1919 and contributing to Gaston’s victory in 1920 in a car he had built.
Although widely acknowledged as mechanically brilliant, Louis lacked a businessman’s temperament and ultimately drifted away from the company he helped create. His technical and sporting contributions were recognized posthumously: he was honored at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1969.
