Malcolm James “Mal” Kutner was a collegiate and professional American football player, known for his career as an end in the late 1940s. In Austin he excelled at the University of Texas, where he became the first Longhorn to be named a first‑team All‑American (1941), also playing tackle, halfback, and competing in basketball and track; the 1941 team ranked among the nation's best, Kutner appeared on the cover of Life magazine, and he played in the Chicago All‑Star Game. Selected in the 1942 draft, he postponed his professional career to serve as a naval aviator during World War II and played on military teams until 1945. In 1946 he debuted in the NFL with the Chicago Cardinals, earning Rookie of the Year honors. In subsequent seasons he was among the league leaders in receiving yards and yards per game, was a key contributor to the Cardinals’ 1947 championship, and earned All‑Pro selections in 1947–1948. After ending his sports career, Kutner worked in the Texas oil industry, rising to executive vice president of C&K Petroleum. His honors include induction into the University of Texas Hall of Honor (1965), the College Football Hall of Fame (1974), and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame (1990).
