Margrave Wilhelm Friedrich of Brandenburg-Ansbach was a German noble who ruled the principality of Brandenburg-Ansbach from 1703 until his death in 1723. He ascended to the title while still a minor after his brother’s death and was initially under the guardianship of a council. He belonged to a dynasty that maintained ties with other European royal houses—his sister Carolina became Queen of Great Britain by marrying George II.
During his reign Wilhelm Friedrich pursued a military career: he commanded an infantry regiment from Franconia and later led the imperial dragoon regiment from 1718 to 1723. His military service reflected the customary role of territorial princes in the army of the Holy Roman Empire.
In economic and cultural affairs, he founded the Ansbach porcelain manufactory in 1710, helping to develop a local production center and diversify the principality’s economy. He also invested in residential and pleasure properties: he acquired and converted Unterreichenbach Castle into a hunting lodge and assigned another castle to his wife, who carried out enlargement works under the direction of the architect Carl Friedrich von Zocha.
He married Christiane Charlotte of Württemberg-Winnental in 1709 and had a son who reached adulthood, his successor Charles William Frederick. He is also known to have recognized illegitimate children, among them Friedrich Wilhelm von Reystendorf.
