Frederick Christian, Margrave of Meissen, was a prince of the old Saxon dynasty and head of the House of Wettin after his father’s death in 1932. A son of the last King of Saxony, he served in staff positions on the Western Front during the First World War, receiving decorations for bravery, and later carried out diplomatic missions to other European monarchs. Trained in law, he wrote a thesis on the influence of Nicholas of Cusa on canon law and worked as a private tutor in art history before taking on the management of the family estates in Saxony and Silesia. In 1923 he became the dynastic heir following his elder brother’s renunciation. In the 1930s he lived in Bamberg and later at Wachwitz Castle, where he sheltered survivors of the 1945 bombings; outside proposals even considered him for regional thrones, although none of those plans came to fruition. Married to Princess Isabel Helena of Thurn und Taxis, he had five children and continued to act in a representational capacity while overseeing the family’s properties until his death in 1968. His legacy remains connected to preserving the traditions of the House of Saxony and to managing the family estates amid the turbulent European context of the twentieth century.
