Marguerite of Angoulême, known as Marguerite of Navarre, was a central figure in the French high nobility of the Renaissance — sister of King Francis I and grandmother of Henry IV. Raised at a humanist court, she received a learned education that brought her close to Neoplatonism and to Italian and classical letters, and she cultivated relationships with poets, translators, and scholars. As duchess and later queen consort of Navarre, she organized cultural circles, assembled libraries, and patronized authors, helping to spread Renaissance ideas in the provinces. Her own literary output and patronage included devotional compositions and works that reflect the religious and intellectual sensibilities of her time. Marguerite also played a prominent social role: she promoted reforms in hospitals and convents, mobilized noblewomen to assist orphans and the poor, and worked to reduce begging in the lands under her authority. This combination of learning, charitable action, and political influence established her reputation as a protector of the letters and a humanist figure in the cultural life of sixteenth-century France.
