Martin Niemöller was a German Lutheran pastor whose career crossed conservative nationalism, religious resistance to Nazism, and postwar church affairs. A former commander in World War I and decorated veteran, he studied theology in Münster and became a pastor in Berlin, where he rose to prominence for his public work. Initially supportive of the Nazi rise out of nationalist convictions, he came into conflict with the regime when it sought to subordinate the Church to the ideology of the "German Christians" and to enforce the “Aryan paragraph.” In 1933 he helped found the Pfarrernotbund, which organized itself as the Bekennende Kirche (Confessing Church), the central core of Protestant resistance. For defending non‑Aryan pastors and opposing state interference in doctrine, he drew the attention of the Gestapo: he was arrested in 1937 and, after trial, sent as a prisoner to concentration camps, where he remained until liberation by the Allies. In the postwar period he took part in reorganizing the Protestant Church in Germany, served as an adviser and at one point presided over international ecumenical bodies. He became known worldwide for a powerful anti‑Nazi sermon/poem reflecting on silence in the face of persecution, and in 1966 received the Lenin Peace Prize. His legacy combines criticism of the Church’s subservience to the state with an appeal to moral responsibility in the face of oppression.
