Mathilde Carmen Hertz was a biologist and one of the first women to gain prominence in the biological sciences in Germany, a pioneer in comparative animal psychology. The daughter of the physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, she earned her doctorate in 1925 with research on the teeth of primitive mammals but steered her career toward the study of animal behavior and visual perception. Under the influence of Wolfgang Köhler, she worked at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut in Berlin, where she headed a small laboratory with support from Richard Goldschmidt. Her work on visual resolution and problem solving in crows and, later, on the optical fields of honeybees (postdoctoral work in 1929) was important for understanding animal cognition and insect vision. With the rise of the Nazi regime, her academic career was interrupted because of her Jewish ancestry; allowed to continue research for a few years thanks to interventions by figures such as Max Planck, she emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1935. In Cambridge, she received recognition more tied to her family background than to her scientific output and, after a few years, ceased publishing. Her legacy lies in the methodological shift she promoted between morphology and experimental animal psychology, and in opening a path for women in biology, although her career was marked by political persecution and the quiet end of her scientific work.
