Mauricio Kagel was an Argentine composer and stage director whose work crossed music, theatre and film. The author of pieces for orchestra, voice, piano and chamber ensembles, he also wrote numerous stage works, 17 films and eleven radio plays, integrating musical and dramaturgical practices into a single artistic gesture. Recognized as a central figure in post-serial experimentation and late 20th-century electronic music, Kagel developed the so-called instrumental theatre, combining humor, timbral invention and neo-Dadaist procedures. He employed unusual objects, electrification of sound sources and performative strategies that challenged the roles of performer, composer and audience. His output expanded the contemporary repertoire by renewing older forms and exploring the theatricality of musical language, influencing generations of composers and scholars of experimental music. The bibliography on his work is extensive, reflecting the impact of his proposals on contemporary criticism and musicology.
