Max Bruch was a German composer and conductor of the Romantic period, author of more than 200 works that secured his place in the European classical repertoire. Trained at major centers such as Frankfurt and Leipzig, he served as a teacher and conductor in several German cities and abroad, including Liverpool, before settling in Berlin, where he led educational institutions and received honorary doctorates.

His output includes three violin concertos — the Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor became a cornerstone of the violin repertoire — as well as the Scottish Fantasy, the Swedish Dances, the Variations on Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra, symphonies, operas and choral works. Kol Nidrei, inspired by Jewish liturgical melodies, achieved wide circulation and gave rise to mistaken assumptions about his family origins.

Although he was recognized during his lifetime, Bruch’s reception suffered setbacks in the twentieth century: under the Nazi regime his works were performed less frequently amid rumors about his alleged ancestry, contributing to a subsequent regional marginalization. His legacy endures in the string repertoire and the German Romantic tradition; he died in Berlin in 1920.
