Max Perkins (William Maxwell Evarts Perkins) was one of the most influential American literary editors of the first third of the 20th century. Working at Charles Scribner’s Sons, he became known for discovering and guiding authors who would shape modern American literature, among them F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe, and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. His ear for young talent and close attention to narrative structure changed the role of the editor, bringing it closer to what is now called an "author editor."

Perkins operated both as a demanding reader and as a mentor: he intervened decisively in works such as Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise and The Great Gatsby, negotiated cuts and reorganizations in Thomas Wolfe’s expansive manuscripts, and defended the publication of controversial novels like Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. He also fostered less obvious careers, helping Ring Lardner, J. P. Marquand, Erskine Caldwell, and Marjorie K. Rawlings, whose The Yearling incorporated his suggestions and went on to win awards.

Known for his courtesy, critical acumen, and keen sense of structure, Perkins left a lasting legacy in literary editing and is remembered as a model of an editor who combined advocacy for authors with aesthetic rigor. He died in 1947, not living to see the full posthumous recognition of some of the works he helped bring into being.
