Walter Menzies “Ming” Campbell was a Scottish politician, lawyer and former athlete who became a leading figure in the Liberal Democrats in the United Kingdom. He served as Member of Parliament for North East Fife from 1987 to 2015, held senior roles on foreign affairs and defence, was deputy leader of the party under Charles Kennedy and led the Liberal Democrats from 2006 to 2007.
Before entering politics, he was a noted sprinter: he captained both the Great Britain and Scotland teams in the 1960s, held the British 100 metres record from 1967 to 1974 and competed at the 1964 Olympic Games. He studied law at the University of Glasgow and undertook postgraduate study at Stanford, was called to the Scottish Bar and was appointed Queen’s Counsel.
In Parliament he became a prominent voice opposing the 2003 Iraq War and pressed for greater transparency regarding the conflict’s legality. In 2006 he accepted the post of Chancellor of the University of St Andrews and in 2015 was created a life peer, positions he held until his death. His legacy combines achievements in sport, law and public life, with an emphasis on liberal foreign policy and defence of institutional principles.
