Michael P. Anderson was a United States Air Force officer and NASA astronaut, known for his roles as mission specialist and payload commander. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Washington and a master’s degree in physics from Creighton University, and logged more than 3,000 flight hours before being selected to the astronaut corps in 1994. He flew on two space missions: STS-89 (1998), a supply and crew-exchange mission to the Mir space station, and STS-107 (2003), during which he coordinated over 80 scientific experiments across 16 days in orbit.
Anderson had a distinguished career as a pilot and instructor in the USAF, serving in air-refueling units and on command-and-control platforms. On STS-107 he was responsible for the onboard experiments when Columbia suffered critical damage during reentry and disintegrated, an accident that killed the entire crew. After his death he received posthumous honors, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
His legacy is preserved through multiple dedications: schools, public squares, an asteroid (51824 Mikeanderson), statues, a lunar crater, and scholarships and academic facilities linked to the institutions where he studied. These tributes reflect his service in military aviation and his contribution to scientific space exploration.
