Michel Portal was a French composer and instrumentalist, recognized in both jazz and postwar classical music. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris in clarinet and conducting, he became known for moving between distinct musical languages and is regarded as one of the architects of modern European jazz. His career began in light‑music ensembles and included collaborations with figures from the French and international scenes, including work with Claude Nougaro and recordings alongside contemporary composers. A cofounder of the free‑improvisation collective New Phonic Art, Portal took part in avant‑garde projects — among them a 1969 recording with Karlheinz Stockhausen — and explored arrangements that combined classical tradition with the improvisatory freedom of jazz. From the 1980s he also devoted himself to film composing, an area in which he won the César for Best Music on several occasions. His discography gathers his own releases and contributions with a range of musicians and ensembles, reflecting extensive activity as a soloist, chamber musician and sideman. Portal left a lasting impact on the European music scene through his versatility, the bridge he built between classical and popular currents, and his influence on generations of instrumentalists.
