Mike Post (born Leland Michael Postil) is an American composer and record producer, especially known for television themes. He became a central figure in TV music from the 1970s through the 2000s, creating emblematic openings such as The Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, Law & Order and The A‑Team, and composing works for Magnum, P.I., NYPD Blue and The Greatest American Hero. His work earned multiple awards, including Grammys for arrangements and instrumental compositions, and an Emmy for a series score.

Post also worked in record production, collaborating with artists and groups such as Mason Williams, Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, Dolly Parton and the band Van Halen. In the television industry he became known for producing music at scale through an office staffed with composers, coordinating cues and thematic variations — notably the “dun, dun” sound variation associated with the Law & Order franchise.

Beyond his creative work, Post contributed institutionally by cofounding the Pete Carpenter Fellowship, a program supporting young screen composers. His output is remembered both for its diffusion in popular culture and for shaping the musical language of American television series.
