Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov was one of the leading Russian novelists of the twentieth century, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965. His best-known work, And Quiet Flows the Don, depicts the lives of the Don Cossacks during World War I, the Russian Revolution and the Civil War, providing an epic panorama of the social and political transformations that affected the region.

Beyond that monumental novel, Sholokhov published short stories and other influential books, such as Virgin Soil Upturned, which deals with collectivization and earned him the Lenin Prize; several of his narratives were adapted for film, reinforcing his presence in Soviet culture. During World War II he reported on the effects of the Nazi invasion in the Don and lost his mother in a bombing.

His career featured official recognition—state awards and political positions—but was also marked by controversies over the authorship of his works. Research and discoveries of manuscripts over the decades, followed by literary and forensic analyses, led many scholars to reaffirm his authorship, while debate continued among critics.

Sholokhov’s legacy remains tied to the literary portrayal of the Cossack experience and to the complex relations among art, power and historical memory in the Soviet Union.
