Muhammad Ali-Haj, or Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., was an American boxer. He is considered by many to be the greatest of all time, and was named "Sportsman of the Century" ("O Desportista do Século") by the U.S. magazine Sports Illustrated in 1999.
Clay first came into contact with boxing through police chief and boxing coach Joe E. Martin in Louisville, who found him at age 12 beating a thief who was stealing his bicycle. He told the officer he was doing a "whup" on the thief. The officer told him to learn boxing. In his last four years as an amateur, Clay trained with Chuck Bodak.
Clay won six Kentucky Golden Gloves titles, two national Golden Gloves titles and the national Amateur Athletic Union title, and the gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. He won the world heavyweight championship by defeating Sonny Liston in 1964. He lost the world title in 1967 and was banned from competing for three and a half years for having refused to fight in Vietnam. He regained the title upon being reinstated, but soon lost to Joe Frazier. He won the title again in 1974 by defeating George Foreman in a fight held in Zaire (depicted in the documentary "Quando éramos Reis" and in the film "Ali"), lost it in 1978 to Leon Spinks and then regained it from Spinks. He retired from boxing while still champion.
