Napoleon II, born Napoléon François Charles Joseph, was the only legitimate son of Napoleon I and Marie Louise of Austria and a central figure in the succession question of the First Empire. Baptized King of Rome at birth, he became a dynastic symbol when, during the Hundred Days of 1815, he was proclaimed heir and briefly recognized by his father as Napoleon II; the succession, however, did not materialize due to the intervention of the great powers and the return of the House of Bourbon.
Taken as a child to the Austrian court, he lived under the name Franz and received the title Duke of Reichstadt, living under strict political surveillance. He was educated in languages, mathematics and military arts, but his political career was blocked by pressure from European rulers, notably Metternich, who saw in him a potential rallying point for a Bonapartist restoration.
Ill and leading a secluded life, he died in Vienna at the age of 21 without issue, and was recognised by Bonapartists as the legitimate heir. His legacy is chiefly symbolic: a transitional figure between the Napoleonic zenith and the dynastic disputes of the nineteenth century, whose memory helped fuel the later rise of Louis-Napoleon to the French throne.
