Nico Muhly is an American composer and arranger active primarily in contemporary classical music, known for a sustained dialogue between the classical repertory and pop/indie scenes. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Columbia and a master’s in composition from Juilliard, settled in New York, and joined the Icelandic collective Bedroom Community, collaborating with figures such as Philip Glass, Björk, Antony and the Johnsons, and Grizzly Bear. His output includes albums of his own works, choral and orchestral pieces, and music for theatre and film; he came to particular attention with the opera Two Boys, created with librettist Craig Lucas, which was staged at major European houses and at the Metropolitan Opera. He has received commissions from ensembles and festivals — including the Britten Sinfonia and the Gilmore Keyboard Festival — and has written works such as Drones & Piano and Luminous Body. Alongside his established compositions in the classical circuit, Muhly has developed an extensive body of arrangements and collaborations that broadened his reach to diverse audiences. His work is noted for combining classical tradition with contemporary experimentation, maintaining a prominent place on the North American and international music scenes.
