Niels Henrik David Bohr was a Danish physicist whose work contributed decisively to the understanding of atomic structure and quantum physics.

Bohr developed an atomic model in which he proposed that electron energy levels are discrete and that electrons revolve in stable orbits around the atomic nucleus, being able to "jump" from one energy level (or orbit) to another. Although Bohr's atomic model was superseded by other models, some of its fundamental principles remain valid.

He formulated the correspondence principle and, in 1928, the principle of complementarity. He also studied the nuclear liquid drop model and, before the discovery of plutonium, predicted the property of nuclear fission analogous to that of uranium-235. Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922 for "his contribution to the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emitted by them".

His theory to explain the atomic model proposed by Rutherford in 1911, taking into account quantum theory (formulated by Max Planck in 1900), was not initially taken seriously. Later, during and after the 1920s, several physicists helped to create the model that exists today. Among these physicists were, among others, Albert Einstein, Louis de Broglie, Erwin Schrödinger, Werner Heisenberg, and Wolfgang Pauli.
