Nina Companeez was a French screenwriter, filmmaker, and playwright whose work spanned film, television, and theatre. The daughter of fellow screenwriter Jacques Companeez, she belonged to a family shaped by exile and the persecutions of the twentieth century; part of that personal history later inspired television projects. She began in the industry as an editor in the 1950s and from 1959 established herself as a close collaborator of filmmaker Michel Deville, writing screenplays and taking part in the editing process on several films.
She wrote and directed her first feature, Faustine et le bel été (1972), and followed it with L'Histoire très bonne et très joyeuse de Colinot Trousse-Chemise (1973). She reached wider public recognition through television series and films, including Les Dames de la côte (1979) and the acclaimed miniseries L'Allée du Roi (1995). She also continued to write for cinema, collaborating on literary adaptations such as Le Hussard sur le toit.
Acknowledged within cultural circles, she received high national honors, including the Ordre national du Mérite and, in 2015, was made a Commander of the Légion d'honneur. Her work is notable for moving between literature, historical memory, and televised entertainment, leaving an important legacy in late twentieth-century French audiovisual fiction.
