Noor Inayat Khan was an agent of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II and is recognized for the pioneering role she played in resisting the Nazi occupation. Born into a Sufi family, she studied psychology and music in Paris and began a career as a children’s author, publishing Twenty Jātaka Tales in 1939 under the pseudonym Nora Baker.
With the outbreak of war, she summoned the courage to take active steps against Nazism: she joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, trained as a wireless telegraph operator, and became the first woman sent into occupied France in that role—a mission of extremely high risk because it was essential for coordinating the local resistance with London.
Her work demanded technical discretion and composure under pressure; despite early assessments that questioned her suitability, she distinguished herself through the accuracy of her transmissions and her persistence in the field. Captured in 1943, she was executed at Dachau in 1944. She was later awarded the George Cross by the United Kingdom and is remembered as a symbol of sacrifice, female pioneering and resistance to tyranny.
