Norman Vincent Peale was an American pastor, writer, and religious broadcaster, best known for popularizing the idea of “positive thinking” through his bestseller The Power of Positive Thinking (1952). For decades he served as pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in New York and, through radio and television programs, built a large audience and considerable influence within U.S. religious and self‑help culture. A prolific author, he published books on personal development and practical spirituality, founded the magazine Guideposts, and compiled sermons and advice that reached mass readership. His approach combined Christian principles with techniques of autosuggestion and methods for boosting personal confidence. Peale drew criticism from psychologists and psychiatrists for the lack of scientific grounding in his techniques, and he became embroiled in political controversies—such as his opposition to John F. Kennedy’s candidacy—that affected his public image. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984 and left a lasting impact on the self‑help field and the spread of religious messages emphasizing practical optimism.
