Odetta Holmes, known simply as Odetta, was an American singer whose powerful, clear voice made her a central figure in the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s. Her repertoire ranged across folk, blues, jazz and spirituals, and her renditions of traditional songs became a touchstone for later generations, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Janis Joplin. Known for her involvement in the civil rights movement, she took part in the March on Washington in 1963 and was praised by leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr.; recordings like "Take This Hammer" are among the most emblematic of that era. Over the course of her career she alternated solo performances with band arrangements, explored a more jazz-oriented direction at times, and preserved the tradition of African-American song. Awarded and institutionally recognized, she received the National Medal of Arts and honors from the Library of Congress and the Kennedy Center. In her later decades she remained active as a performer and as a guest on other artists’ records, with her works reissued and Grammy-nominated, establishing a lasting legacy in popular music and in the culture of resistance in the United States.
