Christian Ludwig Otto Lagerfeld was a German businessman noted for introducing and industrializing the production of canned condensed milk in Germany. After international experience with the Carnation Company—working in markets such as Russia and the Americas—he returned to Germany in 1918 and, in 1919, founded an importer of canned milk that developed into the Glücksklee brand. In 1925 he established Glücksklee Milchgesellschaft mbH, making it a pioneer in the country’s canned milk sector. Under his leadership, the company expanded rapidly: operations moved from importation to own factories in Neustadt in Holstein (1926) and later to plants in Waren and Allenburg. During World War II the firm adapted its production for material reasons and also met military demands; after the conflict, despite losing some territorial units, the company was rebuilt and consolidated as Germany’s leading producer of canned milk. Lagerfeld left the company’s management in 1957 and spent his final years in Baden-Baden. In addition to his industrial career, he is known as the father of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
