Papa Alexander VI

Pope Alexander VI, born Rodrigo de Borja, was one of the central and most controversial figures of the Renaissance papacy, ruling the Catholic Church and the Papal States from 1492 until 1503. He came from the influential Borja family of Valencia, studied law in Bologna, and rose within the Roman curia thanks to ecclesiastical appointments begun during the pontificate of his uncle, Callixtus III, serving for decades as vice‑chancellor. His pontificate was marked by a foreign policy aimed at advancing family and territorial interests: by bulls of 1493 he confirmed the rights of the Crown of Castile over the newly discovered Atlantic lands, and he intervened in the complex Italian alliances and conflicts, providing military support to figures such as his son Cesare Borgia. That pursuit of dynastic advantage contributed to the reputation for nepotism attached to his name. Beyond political disputes, Alexander VI became synonymous in the popular memory with moral scandal, partly because he acknowledged having children from extramarital relationships, a fact that intensified criticism of his conduct and papal administration. His legacy is ambiguous: he preserved and expanded the temporal influence of the papacy while his image came to embody the vices and tensions of Renaissance Christianity.
