Pope Callixtus III, born Alfonso de Borja, was a Spanish cleric who led the Catholic Church and the Papal States from 1455 to 1458. Trained in canon and civil law, he began an academic career as a professor at the University of Lleida and established himself as a diplomat in the service of the Crown of Aragon, forming ties with royal figures such as King Alfonso V. Raised to the episcopal see of Valencia and later to the cardinalate through his mediation between the Aragonese monarch and the papacy, he became known for his austerity and administrative work within the Roman Curia. His pontificate gained notoriety for promoting the retrial that led to the rehabilitation of Joan of Arc and for instituting, during the siege of Belgrade, the noon bell tolling that gave rise to the Angelus tradition. In the aftermath of the fall of Constantinople, Callixtus III focused much of his pontificate on calling for a new crusade against Ottoman expansion, reallocating resources and sending nuncios and missionaries across Europe. He also appointed two nephews as cardinals, one of whom would later be elected Pope Alexander VI. His pontificate is remembered for diplomatic zeal, an emphasis on Christian defense against the Ottoman Empire, and a liturgical legacy that endures in many Catholic churches.
