Pope Pius VI (Giovanni Angelo Braschi) was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Papal States from 1775 to 1799. A Roman trained in ecclesiastical law, he distinguished himself in the Roman administration before his election to the papacy, implementing financial and administrative measures to fight corruption and stabilize the Papal States’ finances. His pontificate unfolded amid profound European upheavals: the Enlightenment, state reforms and the French Revolution all put strain on papal authority. Pius VI defended the Church’s spiritual independence, condemned revolutionary measures such as the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and denounced the Declaration of the Rights of Man, opposing the confiscation of ecclesiastical property. He also faced diplomatic challenges—notably with Austria and the Italian states—and made a visit to Vienna in an effort to counter Gallican tendencies. In ecclesiastical matters he promoted the organization of the Church in the United States and beatified several figures; he was a major patron of the arts, expanded the papal museums and carried out public works such as restoring the Via Appia and draining marshland. His resistance to revolutionary forces culminated in his arrest and exile by the French; he died in captivity at Valence, an episode that marked his legacy as a pope confronted by the political transformations at the end of the eighteenth century.
