Patch Adams (Hunter Doherty Adams) is an American physician known for integrating humor, affection, and whole-person care into health practice. Graduating in medicine in 1971, he founded the Gesundheit Institute to provide free care and promote a community-based view of healing that values relationships, environment, and solidarity as components of well-being. His career includes work in areas affected by war, poverty, and epidemics, promoting interventions that combine medical service, humanism, and joy. He became a public figure for arguing that a physician’s role is to care, not merely to cure, and for criticizing practices and corporate interests that, in his view, distance medicine from human-centered care. Adams’s life and methods inspired the book Gesundheit! and led to a 1998 film adaptation; he himself questioned the film’s fidelity to his experience. In addition to clinical work and peace activism, he continues to publish and run projects focused on alternative models of health care, contributing to discussions about empathy and patient-centered medical practice.
