Patricia Highsmith was an American writer best known for her psychological thrillers and suspense stories, with a career spanning nearly fifty years. The author of 22 novels and numerous short stories, she rose to international prominence with works such as Strangers on a Train and the series centered on the character Tom Ripley, which inspired multiple film adaptations, including Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1951 direction.
Her writing, influenced by existentialist currents, probes the identity and moral ambiguity of her characters, often set in urban environments such as Greenwich Village. In addition to tense, dark novels, she published macabre and satirical short stories that reinforced her reputation for dissecting obsessions and ethical deviations.
She also published under the pseudonym Claire Morgan the novel The Price of Salt, notable for presenting a lesbian narrative with a positive ending for its time; the work returned to public attention decades later as Carol. Her legacy includes wide influence on psychological suspense literature and a body of work extensively adapted for film and television.
