Paul Dessau was a German composer and conductor whose work ranged across musical theatre, opera and incidental music. Trained in Berlin and active as a Kapellmeister at major German theatres between the wars, he built the orchestral and dramatic experience that would shape his later output. In 1933 he went into exile, living in France and the United States before returning to Germany and settling in East Germany in 1948. From the 1950s he forged a close collaboration with the dramatist Bertolt Brecht, composing music for plays and adapting Brechtian themes for the operatic stage; several of his operas premiered at the Staatsoper Berlin. He also wrote oratorios, ballets, symphonies, film music and Gebrauchsmusik connected with the GDR’s cultural propaganda, as well as pieces for solo instruments and voices. Active as a teacher and institutional figure at the Akademie der Künste of the GDR, he influenced generations of composers through lessons and master classes. His works, published by Schott and preserved in the Akademie archives, remain significant for combining symphonic tradition, political theatre and twentieth‑century musical practices.
