Giuseppe "Peppino" Impastato was an Italian political activist known for his open struggle against the Mafia in Sicily. Born in Cinisi to a family with Mafia ties, he broke with those connections while still young and committed himself to socialist and anti‑Mafia political and cultural activities, founding a bulletin, taking part in the 1968 movements, and organizing local actions in defense of peasants, construction workers, and the unemployed. In the mid‑1970s, Impastato helped establish a cultural center and the community radio station Radio Aut, where he hosted the program Onda pazza. Using humor and satire, he publicly denounced crimes and the collusion between mafiosi and politicians, naming individuals and practices that troubled the local elites. During the 1978 election campaign he was killed by a charge of TNT; his death was initially treated as an accident or an act committed by himself, but later investigations and the work of his family and institutions revealed Mafia involvement. The case spurred parliamentary and judicial inquiries into state and Mafia responsibilities. Peppino Impastato’s legacy endures as a symbol of civil resistance to organized crime: his life inspired anti‑Mafia mobilization, public memory, and efforts for justice at the national level.
