Peter Steele, the stage name of Peter Thomas Ratajczyk, was an American musician best known as the vocalist, bassist and principal songwriter of the gothic metal band Type O Negative. Earlier, he founded the bands Fallout and Carnivore, in which he already displayed a taste for provocative lyrics addressing religion, war and social conflict. With Type O Negative, Steele became notable for his commanding stage presence, deep voice and a vampiric aesthetic that became a touchstone in the genre. Steele’s compositions moved between personal subjects — love, loss and addiction — and a caustic, self-mocking humor that sometimes produced misunderstandings and controversies in the press. His work on Bloody Kisses, the 1993 album that reached platinum status, established the band as one of the most influential in gothic metal, with memorable tracks that spoke to both the gothic milieu and responses to accusations of extremist ideology. Influenced by acts such as Black Sabbath and the Beatles, Steele also contributed to other branches of metal and hardcore punk, collaborating with fellow artists and maintaining an artistic approach that blended theatricality with lyrical candor. His legacy survives in the influence Type O Negative exerted on subsequent generations of gothic and doom metal.
