Peter Straub was an American novelist and poet known for combining lyrical sensitivity with macabre imagination. He rose to prominence in the late 20th century for horror and supernatural novels — including Julia, Ghost Story, and The Talisman, the last of which he co-wrote with Stephen King — works that earned him awards such as the Bram Stoker and the World Fantasy Award. Over the course of his career he moved between genres: he stepped away from the supernatural to explore mystery and crime fiction in the Blue Rose trilogy (Koko, Mystery, The Throat) and blended crime and fantasy in books such as Lost Boy, Lost Girl and In the Night Room. He edited key volumes on H. P. Lovecraft and the anthology American Fantastic Tales for the Library of America, helping to raise critical recognition of the fantastic in the United States. His work is marked by narrative experimentation — unreliable narrators, metafictional elements, and poetic influences — and by a legacy that spans both popular culture and the literary establishment, leaving a lasting influence on contemporary horror writers.
