Pier Angeli, born Annamaria Pierangeli, was an Italian actress who rose to prominence at a young age after being discovered in Rome and starring in films that defined the postwar European cinema. She became known for roles in Italian productions such as Tomorrow Is Too Late and Teresa, then moved to Hollywood under contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, appearing in a range of films throughout the 1950s. At the height of the decade she was named one of the “Stars of Tomorrow” and appeared in American films such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Streets of Laredo. Her private life also attracted widespread public attention: relationships and marriages to entertainment figures — including Vic Damone — and friendships with then-current celebrities generated extensive press coverage. Facing a decline in prominent roles in Hollywood, she returned to Italy in the late 1950s and continued working in European cinema, receiving praise for her performance in Moments of Anguish. She returned to the U.S. in the early 1970s for a final film project. Her death in 1971, attributed to a barbiturate overdose, closed a career marked by early success, movement between cultural industries, and an international film legacy that made her a recognizable figure of the period’s cinema.
