Pierre Bernac was a renowned French singer, identified as a baryton-martin, whose career became established as an exemplary interpreter of the French mélodie. His artistic partnership with composer-pianist Francis Poulenc profoundly shaped twentieth-century vocal music: during 25 years of collaboration, Poulenc wrote about 90 songs for Bernac, and the duo presented programs ranging from classical French authors to German lieder and works by contemporary composers.
Besides his activity as a performer, Bernac distinguished himself as a teacher and master of song interpretation. Among his pupils were internationally prominent names such as Gérard Souzay, Elly Ameling, Grace Bumbry and Jessye Norman. He gave masterclasses in France, the United Kingdom and the United States, and served on the faculty of the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau.
After retiring from the stage he devoted himself to reflection and pedagogy: he wrote two influential books on interpreting the mélodie — a comprehensive manual on vocal practice in French and a study devoted to Poulenc and his songs — which became standard references for singers and scholars of the repertoire.
