Pierre Loti, the pen name of Louis Marie Julien Viaud, was a French writer and naval officer whose service in the navy fed a body of work characterized by exoticism and travel reminiscence. A member of the Académie Française from 1891, he rose to prominence with largely autobiographical novels that evoke Tahiti (Le Mariage de Loti), Senegal (Roman d’un spahi) and Japan (Madame Chrysanthème), as well as stories set in Brittany and the Basque Country, such as Mon frère Yves, Pêcheur d’Islande and Ramuntcho. His books often explore passions experienced in the East—Aziyadé and Fantôme d’Orient grew out of his contact with Turkey—and seek a primitive purity in the cultures he describes. While reporting on naval campaigns and colonial conflicts, such as the Sino-French War, Loti also provoked controversy by criticizing the violence of French troops. The author of memoirs and novels of a strongly lyrical and evocative tone, he left a lasting mark on travel literature and the orientalist imagination of his era. His birthplace in Rochefort became a museum, and after his death in 1923 he was buried with state honors on the Île d’Oléron.
