Prakash Padukone is one of the most important figures in Indian badminton, known for a career that took him to the top of the world rankings in 1980. That same year he became the first Indian to win the men’s singles title at the All England Open, a milestone that raised the sport’s profile in India and cemented his international reputation. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s he won national and international titles, including the gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and victories at events such as the Danish Open and the Swedish Open.
His early training and first successes came under the influence of his father, a regional badminton administrator, and his game shifted toward a more aggressive style early in his career. Padukone spent extended training periods in Europe, especially Denmark, where he formed close ties with players like Morten Frost, which helped his technical and tactical development.
After retiring from competition, he served in administrative and coaching roles, briefly leading the national federation and captaining the Indian team in the 1990s. He is also a cofounder of a foundation dedicated to promoting Olympic sports in India, an initiative that is part of his legacy in supporting the next generation of athletes.
