Prince Nobuhito Takamatsu was a member of the Japanese imperial family, the third son of Emperor Taishō and younger brother of Emperor Shōwa. A member of the Takamatsu-no-miya princely branch — one of the four branches eligible for succession should the main line become extinct — he held a prominent position in Japan’s aristocracy before and after the war.
From the mid-1920s until the end of World War II, he pursued a career in the Imperial Japanese Navy, receiving successive promotions and serving in various staff positions, ultimately reaching the rank of captain. His training included torpedo, aviation, and naval artillery schools, and he served aboard ships such as the battleship Fusō and the cruiser Takao.
After 1945, he devoted himself to public philanthropic and cultural activities, taking on patronages and honorary presidencies of organizations focused on international exchange, the arts, sport, and medicine. His public work is chiefly remembered for promoting civil and cultural initiatives as a member of the Imperial House.
He married Kikuko Tokugawa in 1930; the couple had no children. Over his life he received various national and foreign honors in recognition of his official and diplomatic roles at home and abroad.
