Princess of Denmark Charlotte Amalie was the daughter of King Frederick IV and Luisa of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, known for remaining unmarried throughout her life. A member of the 18th‑century Danish court, she spent winters at the royal palaces and summers at the newly built Charlottenlund Palace, which eventually took her name. Although she did not hold a direct political role, she maintained significant personal relationships within the royal family: a conciliator of conflicting temperaments, she enjoyed a good relationship with her father, with her stepmother Anna Sophie Reventlow, and to a lesser extent with her brother King Christian VI. Attempts to arrange dynastic marriages — including proposals linking her to the British and French royal families — failed for political reasons. Charlotte Amalie left a social and cultural legacy: she patronized the writer Charlotte Baden, financed her education and, in a 1773 will, established a foundation for the education of poor girls (Prinsesse C.A.s stiftelse). In her final decades she withdrew from public life due to health problems and died in 1782.
