Ragnhild Alexandra was a Norwegian princess, the eldest daughter of King Olav V and Princess Märtha of Sweden, and the sister of King Harald V. Born in 1930, she was the first Norwegian princess to be born on Norwegian soil in more than six centuries, and she was raised at the Skaugum residence. During World War II she lived in exile with her family in Washington, D.C. In 1953 she married Norwegian businessman Erling Lorentzen, a union that provoked controversy as it was the first time a member of the Norwegian royal family had married a commoner. After the marriage the couple settled in Rio de Janeiro, where she lived for most of her life and had three children. By marriage she became known as Princess Ragnhild, Mrs. Lorentzen. Although she did not perform official state duties, she appeared at royal family events and supported social causes, serving as patron of the Norwegian Association for the Hearing Impaired. Known for conservative views, she made public remarks about royal family marriages that sparked controversy. She died in Rio de Janeiro in 2012, leaving a legacy tied to the history of the Norwegian monarchy and to the ties between the royal family and the Norwegian diaspora in Brazil.
