Maria Carolina Antonietta Adelaide of Savoy was a princess of Savoy by birth and, in her teens, became a noble consort at the Saxon court. A granddaughter and daughter of members of the high Italian royalty, she belonged to a dynastic network that included future monarchs of France and Sardinia, underscoring her political significance and the matrimonial role as an instrument of alliance between royal houses in the 18th century. She married, first by proxy and later in person, Elector Prince Anthony of Saxony in 1781, ceremonies marked by lavish celebrations in Turin. The marriage placed her among the highest ranks of women at the Dresden court, where daily life and protocol shaped both her public and private existence. Unhappy in her adopted country, she contracted smallpox and died at eighteen in 1782. Her early death moved the local population and inspired a popular song that preserved her memory. She is buried in the crypt of the Katholische Hofkirche in Dresden, leaving a posthumous legacy tied more to symbolic and emotional memory than to lasting political or dynastic achievements.
