Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt was a German princess born in Ballenstedt in 1898, the daughter of Duke Eduard of Anhalt and Princess Louise Charlotte of Saxe-Altenburg. She was raised at the court in Dessau and belonged to a ducal family with ties to several German royal houses; among her siblings was the future Duke Joachim Ernst of Anhalt. In 1916 she married Prince Joachim of Prussia, a son of Kaiser Wilhelm II, in a Lutheran ceremony held during World War I. The marriage produced a son, Prince Karl Franz, who later formed dynastic ties through his descendants. The marriage collapsed: the couple divorced shortly before Joachim’s suicide in 1920, an episode marked by the prince’s personal and financial problems. Marie-Auguste was involved in significant legal disputes over custody of her son and over pensions amid the dismantling of the reigning houses after the First World War. In 1926 she married Johannes-Michael von Loën; they divorced in 1935, and she later experienced financial difficulties. In her later years she adopted adults who sought association with a title, a matter that provoked public controversy over the legitimacy and use of noble surnames. She died in Essen in 1983.
