Margarita Maria Teresa Henrietta of Bourbon-Parma was a princess of Parma, the eldest daughter of Duke Charles III and Louise of France. Born in 1847, she belonged to a European dynastic network linking the houses of Bourbon-Parma, Bourbon-France and Savoy, placing her at the heart of 19th-century legitimist disputes. In 1867 she married Carlos María de Borbón y Austria-Este, an Infante of Spain and Carlist claimant to the Spanish throne (who styled himself Duke of Madrid) and a legitimist claimant to the French throne. The marriage reinforced monarchical alliances and produced five children, among them Jaime, who succeeded as the Carlist claimant, and Blanca, who married an archduke of Austria-Tuscany. Margarita’s life reflects the role of exiled royal families in sustaining dynastic claims after the revolutions and political reorganizations of 19th-century Europe. She died in Viareggio in 1893 and was buried at Villa Borbone, leaving descendants who continued the Bourbons’ presence in legitimist and aristocratic circles.
