Francisca Isabel Luísa Maria de Orléans was a princess of the House of Orléans by birth and became Princess of Greece and Denmark upon her marriage to Prince Christopher. A descendant of King Louis-Philippe I of France and Emperor Pedro I of Brazil, she spent part of her childhood in exile and later lived in the Larache region of Morocco, where her family carried out agricultural activities during the pre-protectorate period and the French and Spanish protectorates. Educated in several languages under her mother’s strict discipline, Francisca also distinguished herself in horsemanship and was later permitted to train at a military riding school in Rome. Her marriage to Christopher, celebrated in Palermo amid intense religious negotiations, brought her closer to European courts and the Italian aristocracy, where the couple lived for a time. Their married life suffered financial setbacks: fraudulent management of the prince’s fortune led to a drastic reduction in the couple’s standard of living, forcing Francisca to turn to family loans and even to work in roles ill suited to her rank to maintain their lifestyle. Despite these hardships, she kept close ties with European dynastic networks and became associated with the vicissitudes of royal houses in the interwar period.
